As its name suggests, this museum is far more than a traditional museum: it is a true center of folk culture, vibrant and alive, as illustrated by the many puppet theatre performances held here. The “Free Republic of Outremeuse” also gathers within these walls. While Belgium is a kingdom, Liège remains the city of the prince-bishops, and Outremeuse a land of republics. There are, in fact, three of them: Roture, Saint-Pholien, and Outremeuse. The Free Republic of Outremeuse (République Libre d’Outremeuse, or RLOM to those belonging to the inner circle) is best known for organizing the August 15 festivities, held since 1927 and dedicated to preserving traditional folk customs. This includes the tir aux campes (fireworks) as well as the “Bouquet.” The Bouquet procession is a highlight of the August 15 festivities, drawing large crowds eager to witness this impressive display of strength. The Bouquet itself is a large metal structure adorned with floral arrangements, carried through the streets of the neighbourhood during the procession. Although this tradition is now unique to Outremeuse, similar celebrations once existed in nearby areas. The Outremeuse Bouquet is particularly old, with roots dating back to 1776. Finally, one last detail worth noting: the Bouquet is on display year-round in the main hall of the Musée Tchantchès et Nanesse.
